Autumn Hiking Tips
- Know which areas and parks allow hunting; consult maps and schedules of local hunting seasons or call the park's main office.
- Tips for hiking in hunting zones: Wear a bright orange hat, vest or jacket. Hike in groups and make some noise (also good bear prevention). If hunters are in the area, call out "Hikers on the trail!" to let them know that it's a person on the trail - not wildlife.
- Be aware of the time! Days are getting shorter, so start earlier, stick to known routes, carry a flashlight or headlamp with fresh batteries.
- Fall also brings colder temperatures; and even a little drizzle can leave you dangerously chilled. Wear or bring waterproof and insulating garments, and throw an extra pair of socks in your pack.
